California DNA offers two types of paternity testing: The Non-Legal Paternity Screen and the Court Admissible Paternity Test. Both testing methods have a high level of accuracy, but are collected with different chain of custody compliance issues.

California DNA is a dba of Unisource Screening located in Southern California's Inland Empire and has been conducting confidential testing for the, private individuals, Attorney's, Law Enforcement and the Superior Courts of California for many years. We have a reputation for confidentiality, integrity and expedient test results.

  • The Non-Legal Paternity Testing provides a fast positive or negative result. Samples can be collected in the privacy of the donor's home, without the lab technicians being present. Results are released and reported to anyone listed on the Authorized Self Collection form. This paternity screen is not designed for legal purposes, rather it is an inexpensive way to find out the results before involving others.
  • The Court Admissible Paternity Test gives a statistical analysis of paternity, and can be presented as evidence in court. Samples are collected at our site or we can arrange to have a collection at another site. Strict chain of custody protocols governs their collection and transport to the lab. A legal affidavit/court order, photos, and valid identification is required or the test cannot be conducted. Results are reported to all individuals listed on the DNA release waiver form. Court admissible results report greater than 99.99% probability of paternity as a result of the statistical analysis that is performed after DNA testing.

How accurate is DNA testing for the purposes of determining paternity?

DNA testing is the best available method for determining paternity. All human beings receive half of their DNA profile from their biological mother and half from their biological father. For DNA testing, DNA is extracted from samples submitted by all participants. The DNA samples are then analyzed using 13 or more well characterized DNA markers. These markers are detected using a chemical reaction called the polymerase chain reaction (or PCR). The final result is a "barcode" pattern like those found on packaged foods in the grocery store. If the alleged father's barcode pattern is completely different from the child's barcode pattern, then the alleged father cannot be the biologic father and is therefore excluded from being the father of that child. If they share DNA patterns in common and data is complete, then the alleged father is the biologic father with greater than 99.99% probability.

Are the test results confidential?

California DNA, provides confidential results to all parties involved. Due to security and privacy issues, test results cannot be reported by telephone or e-mail. Samples are tested only for the specific test requested.

Can a paternity testing be performed without the mother participating?

Yes, although a mother's sample is suggested, our methods of DNA testing are so accurate and conclusive that testing can be performed without the mother's sample. The fee for such testing is the same as if we were testing with the mother's sample. If you need to utilize the Court Admissible Paternity Test, you must provide identification for the child and sign a form stating that you have the legal authority to have the child tested.

Do I need a court order to have testing performed?

We do work with many doctors and lawyers; however their permission or formal request is not needed for California DNA, to perform genetic tests.

Do I need to have my DNA samples collected at a specific location?
  • For NON LEGAL Paternity Screening NO, we will send you an easy to use home collection kit and specific instructions for its proper use. You can use this kit as a Jane or John Doe and the collection can be done at home.
  • YES, For the Court Admissible paternity test, samples are collected by a professional technician. Safeguards are taken to assure the strict chain of custody is well documented. California DNA conducts collections at Unisource Screening in Rancho Cucamonga, California or will facilitate a collection site in your area.

Why use the Non Legal paternity test instead of the Court Admissible Paternity Test?
  • Cost: Many families want to know true parentage, but are not interested in pursuing legal actions. These families should not pay the extra costs or put up with the inconvenience involved with the court admissible test.
  • Privacy: Samples are collected in the PRIVACY of your home. A man can confirm whether he is the biological father of a child without anyone else knowing a test is being performed. Results are only sent to the person requesting the test. Additional copies of the test results can be sent to outside parties only at the request of the person initiating the testing process.
  • Turn-around time: Results are mailed out within 5-15 business days from the date our laboratory receives the samples.

I've heard that blood samples are more accurate than cheek swabs. Is this true?

Absolutely not. DNA can be obtained from many sources. Every cell in our body contains the same DNA pattern. We have experienced excellent success using our cheek swab sample collection methods.

What is the strict chain of custody required for the Court Admissible Paternity Test?
  • Samples must be collected by a professional collection facility.
  • Proof of Identity (photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, etc.) of the person giving the samples is required at the time of sample collection.
  • A photo of the person giving the sample is taken.
  • The care professional provides a "sworn statement" affirming that he or she collected samples from the identified person.
  • The care professional forwards the samples by express courier in sealed protective pouches to California DNA's Laboratory.
